IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effect of 11 excipients on the bactericidal activities of benzyl alcohol, chlorbutol, (chlorobutanol) chlorhexidine diacetate (I), chlorocresol (II), methyl p-hydroxybenzoic acid ester (III) and phenylmercuric nitrate was investigated using viable count technique. None of the tested materials interfered with the antibacterial action of all the 6 preservatives. The most antagonistic agents were Veegum (magnesium aluminum silicate), magnesium trisilicate and polysorbate 80 in descending order. In general, the bactericidal activities of I and III were antagonized the greatest while that of II was affected the least. Other excipients tested included: bentonite, carboxymethylcellulose, gum tragacanth, kaolin, polyethylene glycol 1500, polyvinylpyrrolidone, starch and talc. None of the excipients interfered with the antibacterial action of all 6 of the preservatives.
