Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effects of light, temperature, and humidity on the stability of 4 commercially available preparations of alfacalcidol (Alfarol capsules, Alfarol powder, Warkmin capsules, and Onealfa tablets) that were unpackaged or in press through packaging (PTP), as well as Alfarol powder and crushed Onealfa tablets that were packaged in cellophane laminate paper, were studied for up to 10 wk. The stability of alfacalcidol decreased in both Alfarol capsules that were in PTP and exposed to fluorescent light and in Alfarol powder packaged without an aluminum seal under all conditions. The stability of alfacalcidol in Warkmin capsules decreased slightly after exposure to fluorescent light. Also, the stability of alfacalcidol decreased in Onealfa tablets exposed to high temperature and/or high humidity. Alfacalcidol was unstable in Alfarol powder and crushed Onealfa tablets packaged in cellophane laminate paper.
