Abstract
The existing safety shoe standards, and the test methods to determine whether present standards are adequate, valid, and reliable are assessed, and a universal test fixture designed to perform toe impact, toe compression, metatarsal impact and puncture resistance tests is described. Safety shoes were tested for compliance with present standards for toe impact and compression and for metatarsal impact. It was found that there is very little information available concerning detailed injury statistics or hazard situations for the foot and toe. Physiological studies are recommended to detail foot size data specifically involving toe height information. It is further recommended that the present standard be amended to clarify the areas of alignment of the plunger assembly and test sample, and to detail input energy. It is suggested that electrical devices can be successfully employed during testing with good correlation of results when used on whole shoes instead of modified shoes. Excellent correlation was found between the present wax foot form test method and the aluminum foil/urethane foot form test method.
