IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The results of a controlled study of the effect of soybean milk on the healing of gastric ulcers is presented. Of 20 Chinese patients with endoscopically proven gastric ulcers, 10 were given 150 ml of concentrated soybean milk every 2 hours between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. for a period of 2 weeks. No antacids or anticholinergic drugs were administered. A control group consisting of 10 patients were given a standard antacid mixture (magnesium trisilicate and aluminum hydroxide) every 0.5 hr whenever the patient had ulcer pain. All patients received bed rest. Endoscopic examination revealed that in the soybean milk group, complete healing was seen in 2 cases, considerable healing in 4, slight healing in 2 and no healing in 2 cases. The control group showed complete healing in no cases, considerable (3), slight (4) and no healing (3). There was no statistically significant difference in the mean ulcer healing between the 2 groups. However, soybean milk has been found to be effective in the relief of peptic ulcer pain.
