Abstract
HAPAB As a substitute for the use of a photometric detector, a method was investigated for the rapid, specific, sensitive analysis of Abate (Biothion; 0,0,0',0'-tetramethyl-0,0'-thiodi-pphenylene phosphorothioate) employing the relatively inexpensive alkali-flame detector. The apparatus was a Varian Aerograph Model 1700 equipped with an alkali-flame detector and an aluminum column packed with 2.5% E-301+0.25% EPON 1001 on 80- to 100-mesh Gas-Chrom W (AW-DMCS)HP. The injector, column and detector temperatures were 235 degrees. Nitrogen flow was 50 ml/min; that of air, 120 ml/min, and that of hydrogen, 20 ml/min. The electrometer attenuation was 0.00000000002 A/mV. All the Abate standards were prepared in diethyl ether. The column was preconditioned for 24 hr which was followed by five injections of 1 mcg/mcl at 10-min intervals. The column was considered ready when 20-mg injections every 10 min produced identical responses of 10% of scale. The retention time was 3 min. Alternating injections of the unknowns with a 20-ng standard eliminated any problems of column conditioning. Response was linear to 200 ng. Extracted, fortified water samples (Dale and Miles, J. Agr. Food Chem. 17(1): 60-2; 1969; for an abstract see 69-0793) gave 97% recoveries. The increased sensitivity and specificity of the alkali-flame detector for phosphorus makes it more acceptable than either flame ionization or electron-capture detectors for the analysis of phosphorus-containing compounds. 1971
