HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Small amounts of mineral oil (defined as non-polar hydrocarbons) were determined by IR spectrophotometry after extraction from water samples and separation from polar hydrocarbons by column chromatography on aluminium oxide. No distinction was made between non-polar hydrocarbons originating from mineral oil and those from marine life. A simple standard mixture of hydrocarbons used as source for calibration provides a good compromise between the varying specific absorptivities of different types of mineral oil. The method has been successfully applied for monitoring in oil pollution studies.
