Abstract
Migration of styrene monomer from packaging (cups) fabricated from either rigid or foamed polystyrene was investigated at various temperatures and times ranging from 30 min. to 30 days using water, ethanol/water solution and isooctane as food simulants. Gel permeation chromatography measurements were carried out at various time intervals and styrene diffusion coefficients estimated using a rigorous model based on the Fick diffusion equation and partitioning of styrene monomer between the two phases. Activation energies of migration were also calculated. 26 refs.
