The Committee on New Chemicals for Water Treatment has given clearance for the use of certain polyacrylamides, and these should not cause a hazard to consumers, but the use of doses higher than those recommended, or of polymers of uncontrolled monomer content, could represent a potential hazard since acrylamide has been shown to pass through normal water treatment processes. Effluents from conditioning of sewage sludges and industrial effluents containing polyacrylamides could also cause a hazard if discharged to water used for supply. When known to be present, acrylamide can be removed from water by oxidation with potassium permanganate or ozone.
