IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Staggered 6-minute work electrocardiograms over a 4-hour span were recorded following separate administrations of placebo and a sustained-release nitroglycerin preparation to 7 male, nondigitalized, authenticated anginal subjects ranging in age from 41 to 62 years. After placebo, repeated work trials during the 4-hour testing session produced more ischemia; on the average the increase amounted to 25%. By contrast, after the oral administration of sustained-release nitroglycerin (5.0 mg. to one subject and 6.5 mg. to the remainder), repeated work trials during a 4-hour testing session were followed by a substantial decrease in the ischemia area at any point in time; on the average the overall reduction over a 4-hour span amounted to 41%.
