IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Mannitol-based nitroglycerin (I) tablets stored at 25DGC in glass or plastics dispensing containers fitted with standard closures, remained within the BP limits for mean active content during 8 weeks of testing. In some containers, tablets were below the BP limits in 12 or 24 weeks: after 48 weeks, in all containers, all tablets were below the BP limits. The type of closure fitted to screw capped containers had an effect upon the I content of stored tablets; the loss through the closure was markedly reduced by the insertion of foil liners. At 50DG, in all standard containers, the active content was below the the BP limit within 2 weeks, and the rate of loss was increased in the presence of absorbent cotton wool. Tablets in glass containers with foil lined screw caps retained their potency during 5 weeks of simulated in-use conditions and for at least 24 weeks when the containers were opened infrequently, provided the storage temperature did not exceed 25DG.
