IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The adsorption of nitroglycerin (I) by plastic administration sets with a burette (Buretrol) is reported. A stock solution of 5% I in ethyl alcohol was diluted in 5% dextrose solution to give a 0.01% solution which was placed in a 500 ml infusion bottle to which standard plastic sets were connected. I concentration decreased rapidly within the first hr at all flow rates used, but with faster flow rates, a subsequent small increase occurred before a steady state fraction was reached. For the fastest flow rate, this level was 70% of the original concentration. Very little I was lost when 0.01% solution was delivered from a glass syringe through a short length of high density polyethylene tubing. Less than 1% of I was lost on storage in all glass containers for 24 hr.
