IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Results of preliminary studies have shown that solutions of nitroglycerin (I) in D5W and stored in Viaflex Mini-Bags lose more than 50% of their potency after 24 hr at room temperature. The initial concentration of I was 32 mug/ml. The loss in potency was negligible when the same solution was stored in a glass IV bottle for the same period of time. Replication of this study yielded similar results. Additionally, when Silastic tubing was used in the processing of bulk solutions of I, it was found that as much as 15% of I was adsorbed onto the tubing. These data indicate that, in the absence of stability data, I solutions should be prepared extemporaneously and that contact with sorptive polymers be minimized.
