Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP A study was conducted to determine the amount of nitroglycerin (I) lost when using volumetric pump cassettes and silicone rubber tubing in the microinfusion system. Three separate trials were performed using concentrated I solutions and new IV lines and cassettes each time. Analysis of I concentrations was performed using a spectrophotometric kinetic assay method. There was a 72% loss in I concentration after 40 min and a 57% loss at 4 h. The loss is probably not a result of I degradation, since silicone is biologically and chemically inert. It was concluded that there was a substantial decrease in I concentration when infused as a concentrated solution through a microinfusion system using a silicone rubber tubing and a volumetric microinfusion pump.
