IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP A randomized double blind placebo controlled study was undertaken in 5 healthy volunteers to assess the circulatory effects of nitroglycerin (Nitrong; I) ointment with special emphasis on venous distensibility. On 2 occasions a 5 cm long piece of ointment was rubbed onto the chest over an area of about 15 x 15 cm and covered with thin plastic film fastened by surgical tape. The active ointment contained 30 mg of I. Sublingual I was administered prior to the 2 ointment treatments. Results showed that over 2 h, supine venous distensibility decreased after placebo ointment, but tended to increase with active ointment. Three of the 5 subjects experienced headache and one fainted on active ointment.
