IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP A 28-yr-old man with essential hypertension developed hypertensive crisis following one mg of intravenous atropine injection given to estimate parasympathetic nerve activity. After the injection, the patient had severe headache, chest pain, and abdominal pain and blood pressure was found to be more than 330/320 mm Hg, with a heart rate over 135/min. The patient was given 30 mg of sublingual nifedipine and 10 mg of IV nitroglycerin. The patient's blood pressure and heart rate decreased; the blood pressure returned to the basal level in about 12 min and the other symptoms went away.
