IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effectiveness of an oral spray of nitroglycerin (Myocor Spray; NTG; glyceryl trinitrate) in comparison to sublingual (SL) tablets of the drug in the treatment of exercise induced angina in patients with dry mouth was investigated in a multicenter, randomized, 2 way crossover trial with a 1 wk interval conducted in 17 patients (mean age 62 yr) with angina induced during a bicycle exercise test in whom the internal dryness of the mouth was evaluated and who then received single doses of an oral spray or a SL tablet of 0.3 mg of nitroglycerin. Of the 17 patients, 10 had dry mouths. In the 7 patients without dry mouths, remission times of chest pain and ST segment depression were not significantly different after the use of both formulations of nitroglycerin. However, in the 10 patients with dry mouths, remission times for both chest pain and ST segment depression significantly improved with the use of the oral spray vs SL tablets of the drug.
