Abstract
Since 1990 sulphur dioxide emission rates have decreased drastically from about 8 Tg a(-1) to 0.5 Tg a(-1). Emission reduction measures for nitrogen oxides were less successful. Ammonia emissions decreased slightly to a constant level. Whereas sulphur depositions mirror the emission reduction in sulphur dioxide well, those of nitrate have not changed much. Ammonium deposition rates have even decreased. This means that changes in the emission rates of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ammonia do not automatically result in equivalent changes of the respective bulk and wet-only deposition rates. Long-term studies show that this is only the case for atmospheric sulphur dioxide concentrations and sulphite depositions. These measurements indicate also that the emission reduction measures for nitrogen oxides were only partly successful. A considerable reduction of depositions of acidifying air pollutants could be achieved but the reduction of emissions of eutrophying air constituents did not come up to expectations.
