The triazene reagent beryllon III was studied along with the colour reaction with Zn(II) and a new spectrophotometric method for the determination of Zn (II). The results showed that in Na2B4O7-HCl buffer at pH 9.10, beryllon III reacted with Zn(II) and form a red stable complex. The molar ratio of reagent: metal was 2: 1 and the presence of Tween-60. The maximum absorption peak of the complex was located at 532 nm with the apparent molar absorptivity of 1.2 x 10(5) L mol(-1) cm(-1). In 10 mL of solution, 0.06-3.5 mu g of Zn(II) obeyed Beer's law and the detection limit was 0.02 mg/L. The colour reaction system could tolerate many interfering ions due to the existence of ammonia. This method was applied to determination of Zn(II) in water results in consistency obtained by AAS method. Recovery was also tested and values obtained were in the range of 102.5-104.1 % and the RSD (n = 6) of lower than 2.05 %.
