GENOTOXICITY OF VARIOUS ORGANOTIN COMPOUNDS

RECENTLY, VARIOUS ORGANOTIN COMPOUNDS HAVE BEEN USED WIDELY, SUCH AS ANTIFOULING PAINTS OF SHIPS OR FISHING NETS, BIOCIDES AND STABILIZERS OF POLYVINYL CHLORIDE ETC., AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION BY THESE COMPOUNDS HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT PROBLEM. BUT ON THE GENOTOXICITY OF ORGANOTIN COMPOUNDS HAS BEEN REPORTED VERY INFREQUENTLY. WE INVESTIGATED THE MUTAGENICITY OF 15 KINDS OF ORGANOTIN COMPOUNDS REPORTED TO EXIST IN ENVIRONMENTS. THREE GENOTOXICITY TESTS WERE USED. (1) INDUCED MUTATION FREQUENCY TEST (IMF TEST) WITH SALMONELLA TYPHIMURIUM TA 100. THE IMF TEST IS A MODIFIED VERSION OF THE AMES TEST AND USED FOR SUBSTANCES WITH HIGH BIOTOXICITY SUCH AS ANTIBIOTICS. (2) REC ASSAY WITH BACILLUS SUBTILES H17 AND M45. (3) SOS CHROMOTEST WITH ESCHERICHIA COLI PQ37. DIBUTYLTIN (DIBUTYLTIN DICHLORIDE) SHOWED MUTAGENICITY BY ALL THREE TESTS. TRIBUTYLTINS (BIS(TRI-N-BUTYLTIN)OXIDE, TBTO AND TRIBUTYLTIN CHLORIDE (TBTCL) SHOWED MUTAGENICITY BY THE IMF TEST AND REC ASSAY, AND MONOBUTYLTINS (MONOBUTYLTIN OXIDE AND BUTYLTIN TRICHLORIDE) SHOWED EFFECTS IN THE IMF TEST AND SOS CHROMOTEST. PHENYLTINS (PHENYLTIN TRICHLORIDE, DIPHENYLTIN DICHLORIDE, TRIPHENYLTIN CHLORIDE AND TETRAPHENYLTIN) DID OT SHOW GENOTOXICITY IN ANY TEST. TRIMETHYLTIN CHLORIDE AND DIMETHYLTIN DICHLORIDE WHICH ARE CONSIDERED TO BE PRODUCED FROM INORGANIC TIN IN AQUATIC ENVIRONMENTS SHOWED THE MUTAGENICITY BY REC ASSAY. IN JAPAN, ONLY TRIBUTYLTINS AND PHENYLTINS COMPOUNDS ARE REGULATED BY ACTS. SO IT MAY BE IMPORTANT TO EXERCISE SURVEILLANCE OVER THESE VARIOUS ORGANOTIN COMPOUNDS IN VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTS.
