A method was developed for the quantitative estimation of total tin (7440315) in organotin compounds. The method was based on the preliminary decomposition of the organotin compound in a crucible by the addition of bromine in carbon-tetrachloride. A mixture of nitric-acid and sulfuric-acid was then added and the crucible was allowed to stand for 0.5 hours. The contents of the reaction container were then heated to expel the residual oxides of nitrogen and the carbon-tetrachloride until a clear solution was obtained. Heating was continued until all the acid was expelled. A more intense heat was then applied, ending with ignition by a Meker burner. The crucible and contents were ignited to constant weight, and the tin was estimated as stannic-oxide (18282105). Using this method, tin compounds including tetraethyltin (597648), tetra-n-butyltin (1461252), tri-n-butyltin-bromide (1461230), di-n-butyltin-dibromide (996087), tetraphenyltin (595904), and triphenyltin-iodide (894097) were analyzed. Recoveries of tin ranged from 99 to 101 percent of the calculated tin. The authors conclude that the method is simple and accurate. Complete analysis takes about 6 hours.
