Abstract
The data present indicate that DBTL is acute toxic. However all the studies are quite old and porely documented lacking necessary data. Since LD50 can be determined to be below 200 mg/kg, or at least below 2000 mg/kg, it is within the EC-criteria to classify DBTL as Toxic with R25 or Harmful with R22. One data on dermal toxicity indicates that LD50 is between 400 and 2000 mg/kg, DBTL should be classified as Harmful with R21. Severe irritation is observed after contact with skin and eyes. DBTL should be classified as Corrosive with R34 or at least as Irritant with R38 and R41. Prolonged exposure to DBTL in the diet indicates liver damage and deaths. As the effects are observed with amounts less than 50 mg/kg bw/day, this will lead to a classification as Harmful with R48/22.
