Material Exchange Processes between Sediment and Water in Coastal Ecosystems and Their Modeling
Asmus, H; Asmus, R

355-382
Processes of material and organism exchange between coastal communities and the surrounding environment are described focusing on carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus fluxes from Arctic to the tropical coastal habitats. Special attention is drawn to temperate coastal systems of the North Sea, especially the Wadden Sea, where a case study of the Sylt-Romo Bight explains in detail elemental fluxes of particular communities, and their role as sink and source for carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. For this system and the adjoining area of the North Sea, recent developments of modeling are presented. How material exchange is dependent on habitats, food webs, and biodiversity is also discussed.
