Toxic metals in the atmosphere
INTRO.Emission inventories are the key to effective air quality management programs, serving as a basis for the planning of control strategies to achieve ambient air quality goals. So far, air pollution authorities have mainly focused on gaseous pollutants, such as SO2 and NOx, and total particulate matter. Increasing energy demands being met by a greater use of fossil fuels, particularly coal (World Bank, 1979; Wilson, 1980; UN, 1981; Hafele, 1981), have resulted in more environmental hazards from trace elements. Improved analytical methodology in the 1970s provided a higher quality and quantity of data on trace metals, making it possible to assess the impact of these pollutants on our health. Recently, a number of papers has appeared in print dealing with many aspects of the atmospheric cycles of trace metals.
