The new TRGS (Technische Regel fur Gefahrstoffe, Technical Rule for Hazardous Substances) 528 on welding work was published in the Gemeinsames Ministerialblatt (Joint Ministerial Gazette) in March 2009. By this new rule, the Hazardous Substances Committee gives specific instructions on how the requirements of the Hazardous Substances Ordinance can be met for welding, cutting and allied processes. The TRGS supplies information on the particulate and gaseous substances arising during these frequently practised processes, describes the scope for substitution and lists technical, organizational and personal protective measures. Furthermore, it establishes criteria for testing the effectiveness of protective measures that are state of the art. The article outlines the history and the principal content of TRGS 528, a rule that creates a framework for and guide to the further practical implementation of occupational safety and health.
