Abstract
This paper will review recent advancements in our understanding of protoplanetary disks, the region where we expect planets to form. We include a discussion of transition disks and their relevance for our understanding of planet formation. We summarize observational evidence for grain growth and alteration, and discuss the challenges to understanding planetesimal formation.
