The toxicity and application of organic tin compounds, particularly triorganostannic derivatives and bistributyltinoxide (56359) are reviewed. Biological effects and toxicity on lower life forms and cold blooded and warm blooded organisms are discussed. Bistributyltinoxide, propyl and butyl derivatives, bistrialkyl tins, dibutyltinlaurate, triphenyltinacetate (900958), tributyltincyanide triphenyltin salts, hydroxide, and related compounds are discussed for agricultural, marine, and industrial uses. Two case studies of patients exposed to bistributyltinoxide are presented. The authors note that the effects and toxicity decrease with an increase in alkyl groups; mono-organostannic, di-organostannic and tetra-organostannic compounds are only slightly toxic. Triethylstannic compounds are most toxic to warm blooded animals and to microorganisms. They recommends complete clinical and liver function tests and medical history evaluation for exposed workers.
