Abstract
The report describes the role of human biomonitoring (BM) in assessing the effects of environmental quality on health, criteria and methodologies for the production, harmonization and interpretation of data (selection of the population, sampling, pre-treatment and analysis). The report also shows the activities of human BM for metals undertaken in the USA and European countries. For Italy, the data available to date do not allow to have the representative picture of the general population exposure to metals. This fact drove to undertake a national monitoring campaign in the framework of the PROBE project (PROgram for the Biomonitoring of the Exposure of the population).
