Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Results of a preliminary study suggested that ethanol (ethyl alcohol) does not exert constantly beneficial effects on bilirubin metabolism in Gilbert's syndrome, and therefore should not be given to prevent unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Fourteen patients with chronic nonhemolytic unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia were given I.V. 750 ml. of 14.25% ethanol solution in physiological saline daily for a week. A chart listing serum bilirubin determinations before and after ethanol administration is included.
