IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP An open, randomized, controlled study was undertaken to compare the clinical and microbiologic effectiveness and safety of an intravenous injection of ceftriaxone sodium (Rocefin; I), 2 g daily for 7 days, and an intravenous injection of cefotaxime sodium (Claforan; II), one g 3 times daily for 10-23 days, in 30 patients, aged 30-80 yr, with lower respiratory tract infections. Both I and II proved to be very effective. Cough and sputum were normalized in a shorter treatment period in patients treated with I compared with those treated with II. Both drugs were well tolerated.
