IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP To investigate the use of high viscosity grades of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as a film forming agent, ketoprofen tablets were prepared and coated with various coating dispersions containing 1 of 2 types of HPMC and differing ethanol/water mixtures with and without plasticizers; tablets were evaluated for drug release. Results indicated that the release profile curves of coated tablets showed a characteristic lag time; when in contact with the dissolution medium the polymeric coating layer swells and a transparent gel layer around the tablets is obtained. In addition, the chemical nature of the plasticizer influenced release. It was concluded that high-viscosity HPMC may be suitable for use as a film forming agent.
