IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP A study evaluating adjuvant chemotherapy of nonmetastatic squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck was conducted in 237 patients; of whom 118 received cisplatin and fluorouracil plus radiation following surgery for operable patients and radiation only for inoperable patients, and 119 received surgery plus radiation for operable tumors or radiation alone for inoperable cases. Seventy-one patients given chemotherapy and 67 patients given standard therapy alone were considered disease-free after treatment. Time to metastasis was improved in patients given chemotherapy. For patients with inoperable tumors, the combined treatment was significantly associated with an increase in complete remission rate as compared with radiotherapy alone; they also benefitted in terms of disease-free survival and in overall survival.
