Abstract
A method for analyzing aliphatic amines in air was tested. The runs were performed with a high performance liquid chromatograph consisting of an auto sampler, a solvent delivery system, an ultraviolet (UV) absorbance detector, and a data module. The reversed phase column operated at a flow rate of 1.5 milliliters per minute. The eluent, 6 percent aqueous acetonitrile (75058) was continuously degassed with helium (7440597). The amines were dissolved in n-hexane (110543) and reacted with phenylisocyanate (103719) or 1-naphthylisocyanate (86840). The two types of derivatives showed similar molar absorptivities, but the absorption maxima differed. Interfering impurities were found with the diphenylisocyanate reagent. Interference was noted with alkylnaphthyl reagents at high humidity, but this could be prevented with the use of di-n-butylamine (111922). Recoveries of amines were greater than 95 percent even at high amine concentrations and high humidity. The alkylnaphthyl ureas showed a strong UV absorption at 290 nanometers. The authors conclude that this is a sensitive method for analyzing aliphatic amines because the amines are rendered non volatile and stable by reaction.
