IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Beneficial effects of combining 200-500 mg/day lamotrigine with 400-800 mg/day valproate sodium were studied in 7 patients (ages 20-63 yr) with frequent complex partial seizures who had been unsuccessfully treated with other anticonvulsants, including lamotrigine or valproate alone or combined with other drugs. In all cases, addition of valproate caused a striking increase in serum lamotrigine levels, which at times resulted in toxic symptoms that disappeared after reducing the dose of lamotrigine. After optimum therapy was established, serum lamotrigine levels ranged from 6 to 21 mcg/ml, compared with 2-6 mcg/ml in the absence of valproate.
