Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Plasma somatomedin C concentration was measured in 6 sexually infantile, growth hormone intact children, mean age 16.4 yr, who received intramuscular injection of testosterone cypionate (I), 37-100 mg/sq m monthly or estradiol cypionate (II), 1.1-1.4 mg/sq m monthly or I and 0.1 U/kg growth hormone (somatropin; III), 3 times weekly, in growth deficient patients. Plasma somatomedin C did not change significantly over the control period without sex steroid therapy. Therapy with I resulted in an increase in somatomedin C by 6 months but not at one wk and the increase was coincident with elevation of plasma I and II. Pubic hair advanced one-2 Tanner stages, and linear growth was stimulated in proportion to bone age advancement. Therapy with II consistently resulted in an increase in plasma somatomedin C by 6 months coincident with an increase in plasma I. Breast development progressed to early Tanner stage 3, and linear growth was stimulated in proportion to bone age development. The plasma somatomedin C in the group that received I and growth hormone was significantly lower than that of the subgroup of growth hormone intact boys. Therapy with I or II in physiologic doses that stimulate normal puberty development increases the plasma somatomedin C concentration gradually. Therapy with I in hypogonadotropic growth hormone deficient teenagers receiving III replacement does not stimulate plasma somatomedin C.
