Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The effect of counter ion type, e.g., potassium, sodium, lithium and ammonium, on the hydrotropic activity of benzoate salts was investigated. The results indicated that the order of influence of metal ions was generally parallel to the order of electropositivity and weakness of hydration, and consequently their tendency to form ion pairs favoring the aggregation of benzoate molecules. In macromolecular systems, however, ammonium and lithium ions exerted specific effects related to certain inherent properties of these ions and their salts.
