IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP A double-blind, controlled trial is reported, comparing 2% sodium fusidate ointment, the ointment base alone, and the base with 6% benzoic acid and 3% salicylic acid in the treatment of erythrasma in a mental hospital. The 186 male patients had ointments applied for 5 days to the axillae and groins and for 14 days to the toe webs. Sodium fusidate ointment proved to be as effective as the benzoic and salicylic acid ointment in clearing fluorescent lesions and slightly more effective in clearing the associated Corynebacterium minutissimum; it was, however, less effective in removing scaling. Both active ointments were effective over the ointment base.
