IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The distribution of benzoic acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, formic acid and water between aqueous buffer solutions and n-decane, and the effects of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (I), were investigated. Uncharged acids formed complexes with I in the organic phase, increasing the distribution ratio in inverse proportion to I concentration. Higher concentrations of I formed competing complexes with water. Formation constants for all complexes are reported.
