A case report relating to systemic sclerosis on exposure to trichloroethylene (79016) (TCE) was presented. A female who started work at age 40 years (yr) at a telecommunication facility was exposed to TCE inhalation for a period of 2 years. At age 43yr, she developed Raynaud's phenomenon, acrosclerosis and joint symptoms. At age 47yr, serious involvement of the lower esophagus occurred. Congestive heart failure, thrombocytopenia, and kidney involvement was followed by cardiac arrest and death at 62yr. Indirect immunofluorescence testing showed antinuclear antibody on Hep-2 cell monolayers (without anticentromere antibody). Mitotic spindles indicated antimicrotubule antibody. The authors conclude that the patient's systemic scleroderma symptoms were indistinguishable from those of true systemic sclerosis.
