IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The use of potassium permanganate to oxidize organic functional groups and split off aldehyde and ketone groups (benzaldehyde and benzophenone) was studied. The aldehydes were identified by TLC. Benzophenone groups which were formed were identified by IR spectrometry. Thirteen drug products including tripelennamine and phenytoin were analyzed.
