IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The stability of ergosterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol (cholecalciferol), in the presence of ionol (butylated hydroxytoluene) and ascorbic acid, was investigated under accelerated temperature conditions. Both antioxidants, alone and in combination, inhibited or completely suppressed oxidation of ergosterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol in propanol and heptane solutions. Better stabilization characteristics were observed for ionol when in combination with ascorbic acid. Stabilization by ionol increased with increasing concentration, whereas ascorbic acid stabilization was concentration independent.
