Abstract
A variety of consumer and professional products were evaluated for their benzene (71432) content. The chemical products included paints, paint bases, primers, paint strippers, paint diluents and cleaners, lubricants and abrasives, and model and hobby glues. Samples with no nonvolatile components were directly injected into a gas chromatograph; those containing a nonvolatile matrix were analyzed by the head space gas chromatography technique. Samples containing nonpolar petroleum fractions were analyzed with a capillary column. All the products were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to confirm the presence of benzene. Results revealed that 48% of the 133 products evaluated contained 4 to 748 parts per million benzene. Benzene was found in a total of 42 to 50% of the products. The following solvents were also found in benzene containing products: toluene (108883), xylenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, white-spirit (63394003), and benzine. The author concludes that unwanted exposure to benzene may occur in the population given the above associations.
