Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases caused by occupational exposure to toxic substances were discussed. Cardiovascular pathologies attributed to toxic chemicals were cardiac arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, hypertension, myocardial injury, nonatheromatous ischemic heart disease and peripheral arterial occlusive disease. The pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cardiac pathologies resulting from toxic effects of carbon-disulfide (75150) (one of the best documented toxic causes of accelerated atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease), carbon-monoxide (630080) (causing angina, myocardial infarction, claudication, and sudden death), organic nitrates (causing myocardial ischemia), hydrocarbon solvents and chlorofluorocarbons (arrhythmia and syncope), organophosphate and carbamate insecticides (tachycardia, hypertension, bradycardia, hypotension and heart block), and heavy metals (cardiomyopathy, hemolysis, hypertension and fatal myocarditis) were dealt with in detail.
