Abstract
A case control monitoring system for identifying occupational carcinogens was conducted. Target subjects were incident cases of cancer of the esophagus, stomach, colon, pancreas, lung, melanoma of skin, prostate, bladder, kidney, and lymphoid tissue in males between the ages of 35 and 70 years. An active case ascertainment procedure was set up in each hospital in which a pathology department employee notified the researchers of appropriate subjects. Subjects were interviewed and job histories were obtained. Histories of occupational exposure were developed. An average of a little over nine exposures were attributed to each subject's history over 452 cases. Exposure to: solvents; lubricating oil and grease; paints, stains, and varnishes; wood dust; welding emission; asbestos (1332214); lime (1305788); coal dust; pesticides; sulfuric-acid (7664939); copper (7440508) compounds; and ammonia (7664417) were considered. Cigarette smoking was analyzed as a known risk factor with dose dependent results. The procedure was repeated using other cancers excluding lungs; no other associations were found.
