A health hazard evaluation at Inland Steel Corporation (SIC-3312), East Chicago, Indiana was conducted in April, 1981 and September, 1982. The evaluation was requested confidentially because of concern of a possible increase in deaths from leukemia among workers at the facility. In the initial survey, information was sought from company records and worker interviews to identify possible carcinogenic exposures. Between April, 1981 and September, 1982, data on the number and causes of deaths among employees between January, 1950 and December, 1970 were obtained from the company, union, insurance carrier, and Social Security Administration. Thirty six known deaths occurred among 162 boilermakers employed during the period. Four subjects could not be traced. Thirty five death certificates were obtained. Two deaths occurred from leukemia. The expected number of leukemia deaths, computed from the rate in the white male population of the United States, was 0.57. No exposure to benzene (71432) or other possible leukemogens could be identified. The authors state that due to the absence of a known leukemogen and the small size of the cohort, no conclusion can be drawn from the data.
