A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on December 2, 1976, and March 2-4, 1977, at the Firestone Synthetic Rubber Company (SIC-2822), in Akron. The survey was prompted by a request from an authorized employee representative stating that workers "have complained of eye injury including double vision, dizziness, nausea, and respiratory difficulty", and that workers were concerned about currently reported leukemia among styrene butadiene rubber workers. Environmental sampling revealed that the employees were not exposed to toxic concentrations of styrene (100425), butadiene (106990), vinyl-cyclohexene (100403), toluene (108883), dimethylpyridine (108485), cyclooctadiene, benzene (71432) and vinyl-pyridine (1337811). However, one welder is thought to suffer occasionally from fume metal fever based on symptomatology. Recommendations are made for improving exhaust ventilation and continuous monitoring for contaminants.
