Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP An investigation of the solubilization of chloramphenicol palmitate in solutions of cetomacrogol 1000 employing water and water-propylene glycol as solvents was carried out. The influence of propylene glycol on the solubility of the drug, the critical micelle concentration of the surfactant and the number of molecules of drug solubilized per micelle was determined. The solubility of the drug increased considerably in the presence of the nonionic surfactant above the critical micelle concentration, however, the solubility of the drug was only slightly altered by the addition of the organic solvent to the system. Evidence of an association complex between the drug and the surfactant in aqueous solution below the critical micelle concentration, was obtained. The addition of propylene glycol to the surfactant-drug-water system decreased the tendency for the association complex to form and caused a decrease of the critical micelle concentration of the surfactant in the 2 systems: drug-surfactant-water and surfactant-water.
