IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The suitability of Mexican hairless dogs in the evaluation of acne preparations was studied. Materials tested included sulfur, hexachlorophene, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and vitamin A acid (tretinoin). The use of a bland soap (Ivory) or an abrasive soap (Amo-Derm) on site cleaning and comedone removal was also evaluated. Soap treatments cleaned follicle-containing areas but did not remove follicular plugs. Salicylic acid preparations (1-3%) were similarly ineffective. The use of 10% benzoyl peroxide produced slight extrusion of the follicular keratin plus mild irritation; retinoic acid 0.1% in an ethyl alcohol-propylene glycol vehicle caused marked comedone extrusion and irritation.
