This paper presents the first-year results of chest X-ray and pulmonary function tests performed in 1987 as part of an ongoing asbestos screening program being carried out at a large petrochemical facility in the United States. Additional components of the screening program include the standard OSHA asbestos questionnaire and a brief physical examination. Stool hemocult tests are performed on persons over 40 and flexible sigmoidoscopy is recommended for persons 50 years or older. All the workers were examined by the same physician. At the time of the examination the physician reviewed the individual medical and work history. All chest X-rays were interpreted by a single NIOSH-certified “B” reader who was unaware of the individual’s work history at the time of the interpretation. Results were recorded using the standard CDCINIOSH form. All screening spirometric tests were performed by the same technician following American Thoracic Society guidelines.’ Standard equations generated by Knudson* were used to calculate the percent predicted.
