The third wave of asbestos disease: Exposure to asbestos in place. Public health control
Abstract
Asbestos (1332214) exposure in oil refining and petrochemical industries was examined. Information on the physical and chemical properties of asbestos fibers was provided. A questionnaire on the uses, disposal, and handling of asbestos was sent to local unions representing numerous oil refining and petrochemical corporations in the United States. Additionally, bulk samples of asbestos containing materials were taken from a typical refinery over a period of several years for asbestos analysis. Extensive use of asbestos was reported. The percentages of workers exposed either directly or indirectly to asbestos over a 50 year period during the installation, repair, and removal of asbestos were 81%, 90%, and 90%, respectively. Protective measures were frequently not taken by individuals working with asbestos. Types of asbestos detected in samples included chrysotile (12001295) (40%), amosite (12172735) (30%), and a combination of chrysotile and amosite (30%). The author concludes that, despite long available information on the dangers associated with asbestos, workers and their families are still at significant risk of developing diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos in oil refining and petrochemical industries.
