Abstract
This paper provide perspective on: 1. the nature and magnitude of asbestos to railroad workers in the U.S., particularly during the steam locomotive era; 2. the national considerations derived from the findings of a cohort study of railroad workers, specifically machinists and members of other crafts maintaining locomotives; 3. the national occurrence of mesotheliomas among railroad workers and the medical and social implications involved; and 4. the historical-industrial-medical aspects of the railroad industry.
